Full Breakdown Camp Boys Profiles
by
staff
on October 31, 2007
Check out the latest player profiles from the 2007 Breakdwn Battle for the Rankings Camp:
1st Team All Camp
Anthony Salters (5’11 Rickards 08)
Salters is a BIG TIME scoring guard that took home 2008 MVP honors. He is one of the most talented guards in the state. He may be the hardest player to defend in the state. Salters is an incredible ball handler who can use his handle to get anywhere on the court and at anytime. He is a crafty scorer that loves to let the ball fly. He can breakdown ANY defender and pull up for a three, midrange or finish around the basket. He sees the floor very well, but more often settles for the jump shot. Once he balances out his scoring with his passing he will be a great sign for ANY D1 college.
Kenny Boynton (6’2 American Heritage 09)
Super explosive guard who can score the ball every way possible. He led the camp in scoring finishing with 42 points in the camp championship game. In addition, he played locked down defense and made some impressive passes. His vertical leap and ball handling have improved since the spring. He has a variety of dribble moves that allows him to get to the basket. He out played every player who came at him and took home camp MVP honors by leading his team to the camp championship.
Steve Tchiengang (6’8 Montverde 08) VANDERBILT
Tchiengang had a fantastic camp leading Montverde in scoring with 18 points a game. He showed his ability to hit the trey ball consistently. He knocked down several in every game we saw him averaging three 3’s a game. His build and strength is more advanced than most college wings. He also did a great job using his size and strength on the boards. He did big time damage from the inside and out and he will only continue to improve under the mentorship of Kevin Sutton.
Keith Clanton (6’8 Orlando Chr Prep 09)
Clanton is a ball handling forward with great upside. He demonstrated every part of his game on his way to earning 2009 MVP honors. He averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 assists playing every position on the floor. He does everything you ask for in a power forward and a little bit more. He can take other forwards off the dribble, solid post moves around the basket and consistent 12 to 15 foot jumper. If he continues to work on his skill development, speed and agility, NBA commissioner David Stern could be calling his name one day.
Eloy Vargas (6’10 American Heritage 09) FLORIDA
He show flashes of brilliance at the camp like his 22 points, 7 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 assists performance. He displayed some creative scoring moves on the block, on the perimeter, and knocking down jump shots. Vargas had several occasions where he snatched a rebound and took it coast to coast. Vargas has added some weight and gotten stronger since the summer, but he will have to continue to improve to be a finished product. There were some times when Vargas played with little energy. Once he gets the mental toughness to dominate the game from start to finish despite his opponents, there is no limit for his potential.
POINT GUARDS
Dash Harris (6’2 Montverde 08) TEXAS A&M
Dash only participated in one game at the camp and that was fresh off his visit to Texas A&M. In his only game, Dash used his blazing speed to get to the rim and hand off several nice assists. He hit a few outside shots, but that continues to be his biggest flaw in his game. Nevertheless he can score as he finished with an impressive 18 points. He displayed the ability to be a pass first point guard and ran his team to perfection dishing out 5 assists, grabbing 5 rebounds, collecting 2 steals and being an emotional and vocal leader. There was a noticeable difference in Montverde’s play at the camp once they added Harris to the lineup.
Luke Loucks (6’4 Clearwater 08) FSU
Coming off a football game the night before, Loucks started off the camp as an MVP candidate dominating his first game with ridiculous passes and handing out 10 assists in only one half of play. Loucks play cooled down a bit for the remainder of the camp, but he also found some consistency from the outside. Showing his fatigue from his football game and the camp he subbed himself out of some games to catch his breath.
Miguel Paul (6’0 Kathleen 08) MISSOURI
Paul used his score first mentality throughout the camp to give defenders problems. He shoots it from deep and did a great job at the camp of using floaters and different finishes. Paul maybe the fastest guard in the state and he is a ferocious competitor. He came down with a slight ankle injury Saturday night, but made sure he checked himself back in the game for his heated battle with Florida State bound Luke Loucks.
Blake Allen (6’0 Brandon 08)
He really displayed his ability to shoot and shoot it from deep. He has a quick and constant shot and tight handles that he used to create his own shot all weekend. He also displayed good court vision and a quicker first step then we saw in the spring and summer. Allen should have no problem finding a place to play at the Division 1 level.
Ray Taylor (5’8 American Heritage 09)
Taylor is a super quick guard with great court vision. Don’t let his size fool you, he is an extremely crafty player that finishes in a verity of ways and can shoot consistent from behind the arch. He averaged double digits points and still dished out many Sport Center like passes. He does a great job of getting the ball to the players in the right position. Sometimes he can uses too much flash in his game, but more often than not completes the play.
Jordan Fair (6’1 Oldsmar Chr 09)
He started off sluggish at the camp, but picked up his play against Montverde Academy showing his ability to hit the three, pull up for midrange jumpers and dish out some assists. Fair continued his strong play on Sunday and showed his court vision and quick handles as he blew past defenders and made the right decisions in the transition game. He has ability to become a solid player in the Atlantic Sun.
Tony Watson (6'2 Palm Beach Gardens 09)
Watson is a true point, great leader on the court, high basketball IQ and great court vision. He is a coach’s son and a very crafty player. He is one of the few high school players to really use a shot fake consistently. He does a good job of using his midrange game and also a solid shooter from the outside. He struggles to defend quicker players and blow past defenders but is usually one or two steps ahead of everyone else.
Jim Appelt (5’9 Indian Rocks 2010)
Appelt is a smaller, but skilled guard in the sophomore class. A crafty ball handler and deadly shooter he used his abilities to make defenders play honest which opened up the passing lanes for recipients to his nice passes. Jim did a great job of playing as a traditional point and making sure all of his teammates get involved, instead of playing selfish and looking for his own shot. With some added strength and size he will evolve into one of the better point guards in that class.
Andre Smith (5’8 Blake 2011)
Andre is only a freshman, but plays like a seasoned point guard. He showed a great ability to run his team and make his teammates better around him. Smith really proved that he has a very complete game at a young age. He can shoot, pass, handle and defend but his best quality is his willingness to compete against anyone. Andre has an extremely bright future ahead of him.
COMBO & SHOOTING GAUARDS
Shaquille Johnson (6’3 Lee 08)
Johnson is an athletic combo guard who has a knack for scoring averaging 15 points a game. He attacks the rim looking to dunk, has a nice midrange game and a nice stroke from the outside. Shaq had a great camp showing off his athleticism and why he is one of the elite guards in the Florida 2008 class. He is unsigned, but he has the talent to play at the highest level in collehe.
Wayne Sears (6’2 Westminster Academy 08)
This was Sears second year at camp and for the second year he lit up the score board. He averaged 18 points a game. He is a good excellent shooter from the outside, utilizes his midrange game and finishes around the cup very well. We would like to see him improve his point guard skill so his college opportunities can increase.
Dexter Fields (6’2 Olympia 09)
Fields is a bull dog of a guard that attacks the rim like a beast. Has a quick first step that he uses it to get to the rim extremely well at the grassroots level. He also has an unorthodox shoot but he does shoot consistently. Fields’ 10 points per game scoring average was down from what it usually is, but that was because he took fewer shots. He did shoot a very high field goal percentage. He has really improved his ball handling and does a much better job of creating off the dribble.
Dustin McGhee – Dustin really displayed his ability to shoot from the outside at camp. He made smart decisions with the ball and used his ability to shoot to force defenders to play him tight and open up the passing lanes for his teammates.
Chris Perez (6’4 Oldsmar Chr 09)
Perez is a scoring, skilled guard who had a solid camp. He is a crafty guard that scores from behind the arch, at the rim, off leaner’s, bank shots, runners, floaters and every other type of shot you can think of. Could use a few inches on his vertical but he is a hard nosed player that gets the job done against the top players.
Jared Reiner (6’2 Lake Brantley 08)
Heady point guard with a high basketball IQ. Jared had a great camp displaying his ability to run his team, knock down the long ball, finish around the cup and make his teammates better. Reiner should have a great senior season for Lake Brantley
Bryon Bynes (6’3 Boyd Anderson 09)
Bynes really showed off his athleticism at the camp. He had some tremendous dunks and really used his quick first step to attack and finish around the rim. He didn’t shoot consistently from the outside in the game that we saw, but he is a very talented guard nonetheless.
Joel Burger (6’3 Westlake Prep 09)
Burger is new to Florida basketball and it really showed throughout the weekend. All though he may have been the most skilled guard during the skills portion of the camp, he struggled to play consistently with the face paced American game. When Joel adjusts to the speed he will be one of the better guards in the Florida 2009 class.
Jelani Hewitt (6’2 Lehigh 2010)
Hewitt showed his ability to run the point and play off the ball successfully at the camp. He has really improved his skill set since the summer circuit and put it on display in Orlando. He scored from the perimeter and midrange and used his crafty handles to create his own shot.
John Bianci – Bianci didn’t touch the ball much, but when he did he had a productive outcome. His shot is very unorthodox, but it fell on a regular bases when he let it fly. He needs to develop more confidence on the floor, and not just settle for being a catch and shoot player.
WING GUARDS & SMALL FORWARDS
Steven Roundtree (6’7 Englewood 09)
Roundtree was narrowly edge out for 2009 MVP honors. He averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He is an athletic forward who has a good feel for the game. He has a nice looking stroke from the outside, but is far more efficient from 15 feet and in. Is one of the most talented players in the Florida 2009 class and showed that he was one of the most talented players in camp. Roundtree without a doubt has high major talent.
Erin Straughn (6’5 Pensacola 09)
Straugh is a bigger guard who is a very good one dribble pull up player. Straughn is smooth player with a streaky, but good shot from the perimeter. His guide hand affects the ball which causes him to be a streaky shooter but with a simple correction could become a very good shooter with consistency. He uses his size and athleticism at the high school level to be a good rebounding guard Needs to develop a better handle to create his own shot off the dribble. Nevertheless he finished off the camp averging 16 points and 6 rebounds.
Marcus Capers (6’6 Montverde 08)WASHINGTON ST
Capers used his athleticism attacking the rim and catching a few lobs at the camp. Since transferring to Montverde Academy, he has really improved his perimeter shot and handles and put them on display at the camp. Although his shot is till a little bit flat, he connected on them far more consistent then he did in the summer.
James Bell (6’5 Arlington Country Day 2010
Bell is a BIG TIME athlete that is developing his wing skills. He is still most comfortable attacking the rim as struggles to shoot consistently from the outside as he brings the ball to far back. When he develops the ability to shoot consistent, and become more comfortable at breaking his defender down off the dribble and utilize his midrange game the sky is the limit. He did averaged 9 points for the camp and put together a very solid game against Montverde with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Bell is a high major talent.
Shamond Cox (6’3 Lakewood 09)
Cox is a talented guard who is great at creating his own shot off the dribble. He has a quick first step that he really utilizes against defenders. He struggles to be a consistent shooter because he fades on every shot, but is not shy to let it go. When he learns to make his teammates better he will become a great asset. He is one of the better rebounding guards in the state averaging 6 rebounds to go with his 12 points each game.
Shaun Noriega (6’5 North Port 09)
He displayed his uncanny ability as a shooter at the camp. He is more comfortable coming off screens for the three ball than creating his own shot off the dribble, but attempted to both throughout the camp. He has a solid frame for a guard and used it to get to the rim and finish. He will be a very good system player at the next level.
Emarie Bailey (6’6 Arlington Country Day 09)
Emari had a very good camp. He used his size and athleticism to his advantage when he competed against smaller wings. He showed solid ball handling and a better ability to create his own shot off the dribble then he did this summer.
Alex Williams (6’4 FAMU High 09)
Williams is an athletic wing that flourished in the open court at the camp. He displayed his ability to knock down the three well enough to keep the defense honest. He needs to tighten up his handles, but showed at the camp he can be a great defensive stopper. He has the size and athleticism to become a very good player in the 2009 class.
Ben Williams (6’5 Westlake Prep 08)
Ben is an athletic wing with a very strong body. He showed his ability to handle the ball throughout camp. Had a habit of being a little reckless with the ball, but also finished with some nice assists. Williams has a solid midrange game, but needs to improve his consistency on his perimeter shot.
Terrance Beasley (6’6 Pensacola High 09)
Beasley had a very productive camp showing off his athleticism and his ability to hit shots. He is a strong and athletic wing that did a great job crashing the boards at the camp. Beasley should have a breakout year at Pensacola this season.
POST (Power Forwards & Centers)
Justin Jackson (6’7 Eau Gallie 2010)
No one in the camp played with more passion than Jackson. He ran the floor, flew in for rebounds, and attempted to block every shot that was near him. His insipired played led to a camp average of 15 points, 7rebounds, and 2010 MVP. He used his athletic ability to throw down nice dunks, get numerous tip in baskets, and speed past opposing post players. He is undersized to be a high major power forward. As a result, he has to continue to develop his perimeter skills. We expect him to be successful because he is intense and has a strong desire to get better.
Frank Barnes (6’9 Westlake Prep 09)
Barnes is an extremely talented power player who already has a college body. He is built and athletic and uses it to over power players. His go to move is a turnaround jumper from the post and he can hit it consistently. When he develops a few other post skills he will be nearly hard to defend on the block. He put together and impressive camp averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Kevin Foster (6’7 Kathleen 08) GEORGE MASON
Kevin did a good job controlling the boards this weekend and using his athletic ability and bouncy game to perfection. He had a few times were he took his defender out to the perimeter and finished with a driving power finish or hitting a perimeter jump shot. He finished the camp averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds. Kevin has a bright future ahead of him at George Mason University.
Femi Akinpetide (6’7 Montverde 08)
Femi played in the post and on the perimeter during the camp. Although he looked most comfortable backing his opponent down and using a crafty move to finish, his wing skills have noticeably improved.
Sean Jackson (6’8 Suwannee 2010)
Jackson has all the potential to become a high major forward/center. Like most 2010 forwards/centers he still needs to develop, but the talent is obvious. Jackson had a successful camp showing the competition on the summer circuit has really improved his game. He finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
PJ Gaynor (6’8 Mandarin 08) UCF
Gaynor had a terrific camp showing his ability to face up taller or slower players and take them off the dribble and finish around the rim or hit the pull-up jumper. He is very athletic and showed it at the camp by being on the receiving end of his teammate Luke Loucks passes. He really showed the potential to be able to move out to the wing if he focuses on his skill development.
William Green (6’7 Olympia 09)
Green is a lanky forward with tremendous timing. His defense is further along then his offense and is arguably the best shot blocker in the state. He is very athletic and uses it for tip dunks and altering shots. He has been working on his perimeter game and is starting to take more 15 foot jump shots then he did in the summer. When he develops a consistent shot he will become a big time player.
Evan Ravenal (6’8 Brandon 08) BOSTON COLLEGE
Coming of a verbal commitment to Boston College, Ravenal was ready to show the state he could play at that level. Ravenal had a very solid camp attempting to dunk everything he could around the rim. He hit some shots from behind the arch, took slower players off the dribble and made some very skilled post moves against bigger defenders.
Adam Pegg (6’8 Clearwater 08) DELAWARE
The Delaware commitment didn't have his best showing as he had a very up and down camp. When he wanted to play and defend he did so effectively. He showed his ability to constantly knock down the 17 footer and good post passing ability. Had an attitude of not wanting to be there in a few games and those were the games when he was out played. Has the potential and skill to be a good post player at the college level.
Waverly Austin Center ( 6'9 Yulee 09)
Lanky big man who has really improved since the summer circuit. He does a great job at blocking shots and running the floor. His post moves are evolving but really loves his left handed jump hook. Has good form on his shot for a big man. He has lots of potential if he is willing to be developed he will play at the high major level.
Steven Krouse (6’6 St Pete 2010)
Skinny combo forward that ran the floor like a deer all camp. He didn't get a ton of touches but when he did he was highly productive. Krouse made some good moves in the post, on the perimeter and showed some good flashes of solid court vision He did a great job of playing D and crashing the boards. Krouse did a great job of making an impact in most his games without taking tons of shots.
Chris Rozier (6’7 Wolfson 09)
showed his improved wing skills at the camp. He didn’t knock down many outside shots, but really used his size and athleticism to rebound the ball. He looked far more comfortable finishing around the rim, then taking jump shots, but with continued improvement he has a bright future.
John Burke (6’8 Clearwater 08)
He really used his wide body to his advantage throughout camp. Showed some solid post moves, but is not a consistent scorer outside of 10 feet. Josh isn’t much of an athlete, but used his feel for the game to secure rebounds and have a successful camp.
Audra Williams (6’9 Boone 08) MIDDLE TENNESSEE
Aundra didn’t play much on the circuit in the spring and summer because of an injury, but really made up for it at the camp. He came out to prove he is one of Florida’s finest posts and had a breakout camp. He rebounded well, displayed improved posts moves and showed good range on his shot for a big man. He was one of the most productive post players in camp.
John Burke (6’8 Clearwater 08)
Burke really showed his ability to face up against bigger players and knock down the jumper consistently at camp. He finished well in transition and battled on the boards with some of the bigger post players at camp. John had a very productive camp and displayed his ability to compete.
David Loubeau (6’8 Westlake Prep 08) TEXAS A&M
Loubeau may have been the most skilled back to the basket player in camp. He used his strong, skilled post moves to score all weekend. Loubeau also used his ability to face up from 15 feet to score on bigger opponents. He did a great job of using his size and athleticism on the boards and running the floor.
Darius Morales (6’8 Timber Creek 09)
His defense and rebounding are much further then his offense and he really showed it at the camp. He used his long arms to get several blocks and alter shots during camp. He also did a good job of rebounding his own missed shots at camp. When he develops better post moves he will become a very good post player in the 2009 class.
